Hospital Care: They'll Hurt You

Yesterday Marcia, my wonderful wife, went to a local hospital for a routine gut inspection, the one where they anesthetize you and run a hose up there and take a look around.

Before the “procedure” Marcia spoke to the anesthesiologist about her history of having a difficult time coming out of anesthesia.  She explained that she’d need more time after the exam, to which the doctor replied, “Oh, you have nothing to worry about.  I will have you in lala land.”  He’s a physician from India, with good English, but a decided accent.  The doctor either didn’t understand her words of caution or ignored them.  Both, I think.

When the exam was over Marcia was wheeled out to a waiting area.  The anesthesiologist asked her a few questions, which she answered.  She said she was sitting, head down, in the wheelchair.  Satisfied she was ok, the doctor walked away, leaving Marcia near two nurses.  He liked the way she slumped, I reckon.
She told the nurses that she needed to use the restroom.  A nurse pointed it out and Marcia walked by herself to the restroom.  While she was inside the small room, a nurse handed her clothes through the door and said for her to “get dressed.”  Boots, tights, tops, jeans, etc.
Marcia was alone trying to get her clothes on when she passed out, fell and smacked the side of her head, her jaw and her lower right side.  Nurses rushed in.  Marcia said they must have heard her cry out when she fell.

I arrived to pick her up a few minutes later and Marcia was sitting in a wheel chair, a compress to the side of her head where there was a bump.  Think how much worse it might have been!

I complained loudly to the anesthesiologist, who was defensive, and went on about how he’d questioned her, found her ok.  Everything fine.  The nurses--now there were two at hand, acting like they gave a damn--were all about getting her out of there, in the car with me.  It was like a waiter turning on his charm at the end of a really bad meal.

Today Marcia has a headache and her jaw hurts.  She has a watermelon-sized bruise on her right thigh. No problems from the tube ‘n search.  She’ll be ok.

The incident is going to be in her upcoming book, part of which compares the care she’s received in Colorado and Florida to the care our dachshund has had at veterinary clinics.  Maybe the next time she or I need medical help we’ll see if a vet can help us...

Ok, now for worse news:  I just watched a video of some poor old guy in a Chicago nursing home, who was wheeled out on a patio for a smoke with other residents.  His clothing caught fire.  Not a “caregiver" in sight, the other old folks in wheelchairs around him were powerless to help.  While he’s burning--flames were clearly visible in the video, which you'll have seen by now--he rolls himself inside the nursing home, where the “nurses,” at least three of ‘em, flap at him, but mostly stay away from the open flames.  Finally, somebody turns a fire extinguisher on the guy, then they roll him outside and LEAVE HIM ALONE AGAIN!!  He’s sitting there covered with foam, slumped over in his wheelchair, having been burned so badly from his thighs to his head, that he has a heart attack and dies.

Worse than that, for all of us:  I turned on the television a few minutes ago and caught Netanyahu saying that Israel is not going to allow Iran to have nuclear weapons, and will act with or without America’s support.  Read: without Obama’s support.  He calls Rouhani from Iran a “wolf in sheep’s clothing,” implying that America--our president-- has bought Rouhani’s phony act and is buying the distraction of “sanctions being removed” while Iran continues to develop nuclear capabilities.  In other words, he says Obama’s being played.  An accompanying photograph shows Netanyahu looking at Obama with barely concealed contempt.

Then there’s today, a day of infamy, the day Obamacare begins.  Obama is on television surrounded by people who will benefit.  The man has no soul, just a Liberal, Socialist plan that will change forever the way we live.  It won’t be pretty.  America is on the skids, lost at sea, SOL.
